Last night at the dinner table I asked my five year old son Ben if he believed he could tie his shoes. He said no he can't. I asked him if he could figure out how to tie his shoe by Friday (five sleeps in kid time). He replied "no, it's too hard." I then asked Emily, my seven year old daughter, if she could tie her shoes, she replied "no." I then asked her if she could learn to tie her shoes by Friday. She enthusiastically replied "Yes, I can!" To make the situation more interesting I made the offer to buy each of them a toy they wanted if they could learn to tie their shoes by Friday. They were both excited and Ben reluctantly decided to give it a shot.

Right after dinner they grabbed a pair of shoes and began moving the laces in different direction, quickly becoming overwhelmed. Ben said he was"too tired and it's too hard" after a few minutes of trying. My daughter Emily however got upset at her lack of skill however she kept trying. She took breaks and asked for assistance. After about fifteen minutes of trying and a little guidance from myself, she actually tied her shoes by herself! It was a proud moment for me. she was very proud of herself. Ben had been long since given up, believing he would never get it.

I spent the next twenty minutes with Ben. The problem was not the difficulty of tying his shoes. The problem was his attitude towards the problem. Both children were very frustrated at the start of the shoe tying experience. Soon Ben practiced the steps and came very close to tying his own shoe. He was unable to complete they whole process by himself however he was so close. He saw the light and gained a new hope. I asked him what had changed? Thoughtfully he responded "my attitude." Those words made me so proud of him, he learned the what I was trying to show him. I leave you with a few quotes from the great Henry Ford. Make today count!

If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.
